Ancient Origin: This is one of the most ancient of all oils with documented use which stretches back some 4000 years. Its uses vary from incense to perfume to embalming material. The Chinese have used it for medicinal purposes since the earliest times and in India it was (and still is) mixed with rose oil to make the exotic scent aytar. The tree itself is a small parasitic evergreen which obtains its nourishment by attaching its suckers to the roots of other trees. It has slender branches and leathery leaves and the tree must be at least thirty years old before the oil can be extracted from the heartwood and roots. The oil is extracted by water or steam distillation from the Sandalwood tree
Source: Originally a native of tropical Asia, India is now the main essential oil producer. The region of Mysore exports the highest quality oil although some of it is distilled in Europe and the USA Australia produces a West Indian Sandalwood or Amyris which is a different type of Sandalwood from the East Indian type.
Skin Care: It is good for dry or dehydrated skins especially in the form of warm compresses and is also helpful for oily skins and acne as it is slightly astringent and a powerful antiseptic. Sandalwood makes a good addition to any mens facial products as it can soothe, relieve itches and rashes as well as having a masculine smell
Respiratory system: It is a very good pulmonary antiseptic which is particularly good for dry, persistent and irritating coughs. It is also one of the best essential oils to use in the treatment of chronic bronchitis and can also be used for soothing sore throats .The best method is inhalation or external application to the chest and throat
Genito-urinary System: Sandalwood has been used for two and a half thousand years for the treatment of urinary tract infections such as cystitis and for gonorrhea but it is important to have proper training and be acting on medical advice before using it in these areas.
Digestive System: Good for diarrhoea and nausea
Mixing Oils: With its deep sweet-woody smell it blends well with many oils including Rose, Clove, Lavender, Black Pepper, Bergamot, Rosewood, Geranium, Benzoin, Vetivert, Patchouli, Myrrh and Jasmine
