Ancient Origin: Patchouli is used extensively in the Far East to scent linen and clothes as well as prevent the spread of disease. Possibly used originally as an antidote to poisonous snake bites, further uses have been discovered over the centuries including treatment of headaches. An amber or dark orange viscous liquid with a sweet, rich, herbaceous, earthy odour, it is extracted from a perennial herb of the same name. It is a bushy plant and a member of the same family as many of the Mediterranean herbs such as Basil, Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary etc. Like wine, this oil actually improves with age and used in small proportions it can have an almost oriental quality
Source: Native to tropical Asia, especially the Philippines and Indonesia. Also cultivated in India, China, Malaysia and South America. The oil is distilled in Europe and the USA from dried leaves
Skin Care: The main use for Patchouli is in skincare and the treatment of skin disorders. It is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic and fungicidal as well as a cell-regulator. It is helpful in treating acne, cracked skin, certain types of eczema, fungal infections such as athletes foot, some skin allergies and dandruff
Digestive System: It has been used for treatments for obesity, possibly because it helps fluid retention
Nervous System: It is an antidepressant and often can help with anxiety, depression and stress-related conditions
Mixing Oils: It blends well with Vetivert, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Geranium, Clove, Lavender, Rose, Neroli, Bergamot, Clary Sage and oriental type bases.
