Ancient Origin: Old English seamen discovered that scurvy could be kept at bay by including lemon juice in their diet. Following this discovery Lemon oil became somewhat of a "cure-all" used to counter most infectious illnesses such as malaria and typhoid. The lemon tree itself is thought to have originated in India and the oil is produced by cold expression from the outer part of the fresh peel. It takes about 3,000 of them to produce a kilo of essential oil.

Source: Lemons were probably native to East India, but are now cultivated world-wide especially in Spain and Portugal. Italy, Cyprus, Guinea, Israel and America (Florida and California) are the main growers

Skin Care: Lemon is very good for all sorts of cuts and wounds and in addition Lemon is also haemostatic ( helps to stop bleeding) . If you have a gum or tooth bleed then take some fresh Lemon juice and just hold it in the mouth for as long as possible. A mouthwash of Lemon is good for gingivitis and mouth ulcers. For nosebleeds soak a small pad of cotton wool in lemon juice and insert into the nostril. It has powerful bactericide qualities and research shows that even when diluted to 0.2% it will make tuberculosis bacilli completely inactive and kill diphtheria bacilli in 20 minutes. It is also good for treating oily skins as it has astringent properties as well as brightening dull and discoloured skin. It is also good for treating spots and boils/ Oil of lemon can be used as an alternative treatment for corns, veruccas and warts. Apply a few drops to the affected area (avoid healthy skin) each day for as long as needed.

Digestive system: Lemon can help to counter acidity in the body and as such can help with gastric acidity, stomach ulcers and digestive problems It can also be a general tonic to the digestive system including the liver and pancreas.

Immune System: Lemon oil has a number of important properties of which the most important is its ability to stimulate the white corpuscles that defend the body against infection.

Mixing Oils: It blends well with Neroli, Citronella, Lavender, Rosemary, Clary Sage and any of the citrus family of oils.
