Origin: Juniper is a small tree, which belongs to the cupressus family, and has needle like leaves and berries which are first blue but then turn black after two years when they are thought to be ripe. Oil can be distilled from either the berries or a combination of berries and twigs The Juniper distilled purely from the berries is called Juniperberry whilst the combination of both twig and berry bares the name Juniper. It has been known since antiquity as an antiseptic and also as an aid to protect from infection and was burnt with Rosemary in French hospital wards until relatively recently for this very purpose
Sources: It is native to the northern hemisphere; Scandinavia, Siberia, Canada, northern Europe and northern Asia. The oil itself is produced mainly in Italy, France, Austria, Spain, Germany and Canada.
Genito-urinary system: Juniper can be used to good effect in treating cystitis, pyelitis and urinary stones. Obviously with such conditions it is advisable to seek medical attention but treatments such as aromatic baths and massage can undoubtedly help.It can work well in helping men with prostate trouble and all types of water retention
PLEASE NOTE: that overmuch use can cause problems in these areas so caution is advised
Skin care: Juniper is good at treating skin conditions such as acne, eczema and oily complexions. It works well when mixed with carrier lotion for treating teenage boys skins as they find the woody smell more acceptable then some of the sweeter smelling oils
Nervous System: Juniper can help with toxins in the body and with a general feeling of sluggishness and tiredness that seems to be associated with much of modern day living. It can help with emotionally draining situations and combined with an oil such as Grapefruit can make a stimulating and refreshing bath
General: Juniper can help with the removal and prevention of fleas and tics in cats and dogs. It can also be used to treat animals with dermatitis
Mixing oils: It blends well with vetivert, sandalwood, cedarwood, cypress, clary sage, pine, lavender, rosemary, benzoin, geranium and citrus oils
