Ancient Origin: First used in the Middle Ages when this herb was considered to be a "cure-all". Medieval authors called the herb Clear Eye and attributed it to the property of healing all kinds of eye disorders. It was used for digestive disorders, kidney disease, uterine and menstrual complaints. The mucilage from the seeds was used for treating tumours and for removing dust particles from the eyes. The herb is a stout perennial which grows up to a metre high with large hairy leaves, it produces small blue flowers. The oil is extracted from these leaves and flowers by steam distillation and is usually a pale yellow-green liquid with a distinctive sweet, nutty scent

Source: Originally a native of southern Europe, it is now grown in the USA, Britain, Morocco and central Europe as well as being widely cultivated in the Mediterranean region

Skin Care: This oil is good for treating acne, boils, dandruff, hair loss, inflamed conditions, oily skin and hair, ophthalmia, ulcers and wrinkles. It can help to reduce the excessive production of sebum, especially on the scalp and for people with dandruff and greasy hair a final rinse with clary sage can help combat this

Circulation muscles and joints: Useful for high blood pressure, muscular aches and pains.

Respiratory system: Clary Sage is valuable for treating asthma as it both relaxes spasm in the bronchial tubes and helps the anxiety and emotional tension often found in asthma sufferers. It can also help to treat throat infections and whooping cough

Nervous System: Although it has so many uses it is in the area of stress-related illness that it is most valuable. It can be used to help the ever growing number of people who suffer from the anxiety created by 20 century living. Clary Sage is a very powerful tonic as well as being very relaxing and it can help in convalescence, during depression and in the post natal recovery period. It can also be very helpful with excessive sweating. It can also be helpful with couples who are having a bad patch in their relationship, maybe because of external worries and are experiencing tension in their sexual life

Immune System: Clary Sage can help to strengthen the bodies defence systems.

Genito-urinary System: Clary is an emmenagogue and can help scanty or missing periods. It is best used during the first half of the menstrual cycle as if it used in the second half it can induce heavy bleeding. However it must not be used during pregnancy.

Digestive System: As it is warming and anti spasmodic it helps digestive problems especially cramps or griping colicky pains

Mixing Oils: A deceptively useful oil as it blends well with so many other oils. The addition of Clary Sage often results in a much more effective treatment. Mixes well with Lavender, Geranium, Sandalwood, Jasmine, and most citrus oils

Warning: Never use Clary Sage and drink alcohol as it can induce a narcotic effect which could be dangerous. Never use during pregnancy.
