Coughing is a reflex action started by stimulation of sensory nerves in the lining of the respiratory passages - the tubes we use to breathe. Coughing usually means there is something in the respiratory passages that should not be there. This can be caused by breathing in dust particles in the air or when a piece of food goes down the wrong way. It could also be a sign that an infection in the lungs is making the respiratory passages produce phlegm. A productive, chesty cough, in which phlegm is coughed up, can be treated with an expectorant cough mixture to help loosen the phlegm and make it easier to cough up from the airways. It is always advisable to consult your doctor. However alternative therapies can help to ease the symptoms and make it easier. The use of inhaled steam can be very effective in liquefying mucus and reducing irritation. To control the steam, bend over the steaming water while holding a towel over your head. Inhaling essential oils can stimulate your lungs to expel phlegm. The essential oils chosen for these chesty cough products contain four essential oils.

Lavender is reputed to have a sedative action on the cough and respiratory tract as well as having antibacterial qualities. It can be helpful as a decongestant. Benzoin is soothing and warming and can be helpful in clearing mucus. Frankincense is reputed to be especially active with regards to the lungs and can calm coughs. It can help to slow and deepen the breathing as well as being helpful with catarrh whilst Thyme is an excellent expectorant and has been used for centuries to help heal respiratory conditions.
