Ancient origin: It has been used in Chinese medicine for over 4000 years to treat malaria, cholera, diarrhoea and other digestive problems.Like many spices it was highly prized and Attila the Hun is reputed to have demanded 3,000 lbs of pepper as part of the ransom for the city of Rome. In Greece it is still used to fortify the stomach. The mendicant monks of India found a few grains of pepper a day gives them remarkable endurance enabling them to walk great distances. The plant is a perennial woody climbing vine with heart-shaped leaves and small white flowers. The berries turn from red to black as they mature, the peppercorns are basically the dried unripened berries. The oil is produced by steam distillation from the crushed peppercorns

Source: Native to south west India, it is cultivated extensively in tropical climates. Major producers are India, Indonesia, Malaysia, China and Madagascar. It is also distilled in Europe and the USA

Black Pepper can be valuable in anaemia as it is a stimulant of the spleen which is involved in the production of new blood cells. This action is also good following heavy bleeding or severe bruising.

Respiratory system: Black Pepper is a warming oil and so it is good for catarrh and chills.

Digestive system: Black Pepper t is excellent for treating disorders of the digestive tract as it is an antispasmodic, tonic and stimulant. It can be used to help a sluggish digestive system and will soothe the smooth muscle of the gut. It also helps to stimulate the kidneys.

Mixing Oils: It blends well with Lavender, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Rosemary, Marjoram, spices and florals.
