Description
Origin: The Egyptians used this aromatic herb to flavour their wine and food. Peppermint essential oil was also used by the ancient Chinese and American Indians, it is difficult to trace its exact origin, but it has been found to have been used in many diverse cultures. In Egypt evidence of peppermint has been found in tombs dating back as far as 1000 BC. Peppermint is a perennial herb whose leaves are shorter and broader than spearmint with larger spikes of purple flower. It is a British classic, although it is in fact found throughout the world.

Source: Peppermint is native to Europe although the USA now produces more essential oil than any other country. English plants are said to produce the best quality although it is cultivated worldwide.

Skin Care: It is said to have a mildly antiseptic quality which can be used to cleanse and decongest the skin especially for acne, itchy skin and rashes. Use Peppermint essential oil in a cooling massage to help revive tired feet.

Circulation, muscles and joints: It is reputed to help muscular pain, palpitations and neuralgia.

Respiratory system: When inhaled (in steam) Peppermint will help to alleviate catarrh and is said to provide relief from head colds and bronchitis. It helps to clear the nasal passages and sinuses and is excellent when combined with Lavender as each oil seems to compliment the other.

Immune System: Peppermint helps colds and flu as its warming and stimulating properties are particularly valuable at the onset of a cold. It can also be used for fevers due to its cooling properties.

Nervous System: Peppermint is said to clear the head and stimulate the brain aiding clear thinking and alertness. Cold compresses of Peppermint and Lavender essential oil applied to the forehead and temples is said to relieve headaches and migraines.

Digestive System: Probably its best known use is as a relief for digestive upsets. Massage a weak dilution of the natural oil into the stomach and abdomen in a clockwise direction to help alleviate colic, diarrhoea, indigestion, vomiting, travel sickness and stomach spasm.

General: Peppermint is good for deterring mosquitoes and other insects. Burn a few drops in an oil burner to help keep them away.

Mixing Oils: It blends well with Rosemary, Benzoin, Lavender, Marjoram, Lemon and Eucalyptus.
