Description

Ancient Origin: A traditional culinary herb, also known as "Oregano". Oregano derives from the Greek word meaning "joy of the mountains". In Latin the name is derived from "major" meaning greater because it was thought in ancient times to confer longevity, hence a greater lifespan. The ancient Greek’s had a high regard for this oil using it in their fragrances, cosmetics and medicines. The oil is produced by steam-distillation from the leaves and flowering tops of this popular perennial herb.

Source: The oil is native to the Mediterranean region, Egypt and North Africa.

Skin Care: It can be helpful with bruises, chilblains and ticks.

Digestive System. As we might expect from its ages-old use in cooking, it has several helpful actions on the digestion. It reduces colicky, intestinal cramps and strengthens peristalsis.

Nervous System: It has a warming effect on the mental and emotional level and can be comforting for people suffering grief or loneliness. It is best used for a short time as it can have a deadening effect on the emotions when used long term. It can also help with insomnia as it can cause drowsiness and has sedative properties.

Circulation, Muscles and Joints: It is useful for treating high blood pressure and heart conditions as it dilates the arteries and thereby reduces the strain on the heart. The same action on the tiny capillaries just beneath the skin produces a feeling of warmth and therefore is valuable for massaging tight , tired and painful muscles especially after heavy physical activity. It can help to reduce the pain of arthritis and rheumatism.

Genito-urinary System: A hot compress of Marjoram is an excellent way of reducing menstrual cramps. Marjoram is an anti-aphrodisiac.

Mixing Oils: It blends particularly well with Bergamot, Lavender, Basil or Rosemary.
