Description
Origin: Lavender comes from the Roman word "lavare" meaning to "wash". This reflects the fact that lavender was a favoured aromatic used in their daily bathing rituals. Although the Greeks burned lavender twigs to ward off plagues, it was the Romans who spread the popularity of this shrub throughout Europe. It is a very common scent familiar to everyone and of all the oils it is the most versatile. Lavender comes from an evergreen woody shrub which grows about 1 metre tall and has spikes of a beautiful violet-blue. It has been continuously used for thousands of years and its popularity has only ever increased.

Source: This type of Lavender is native to the mountainous regions of France and Spain. It is also found in North Africa, Italy and Albania. It differs from traditional Lavender in its leaf shape which is broader and rougher and flower which is more compressed and of a dull blue-grey colour. However it shares most of its properties although High Alpine Lavender is fiercer and more piercing and therefore needs to be used more sparingly.

Useful for: It is capable of many jobs and wonderful to use. If you could have no other essential oil in your house, then lavender would be the prime choice, if only because it is so effective in treating burns and scalds. It is also naturally antibiotic, anti-depressant, sedative and a de-toxifier. Lavender has a multitude of other uses which make it such a popular and indispensable oil.

Nervous System: Lavender is perhaps best associated with sleep and can aid insomnia or sleep related disorders due to tension or stress. It is excellent for shock related conditions. For migraine and headaches it is good when used in a cold compress or placed in a few drops of boiling water and inhaled. It can help with PMT or depression.

Skin Care: Lavender is wonderful for treating burns and as it can be applied directly to the skin it makes a very easy treatment for scalds, sunburn etc. It is good for allergies, bruises, athletes foot, boils, spots, eczema, scabies, dermatitis, inflammations and acne. Sores, spots and boils can also be treated with Lavender oil.

Respiratory System: Asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, throat infections, whooping cough and halitosis all respond to this oil which can be massaged gently onto the throat, nose or chest, used in the bath or as a steam inhalation combined with Eucalyptus.

Muscles and Joints: It is best used as a massage oil to give relief from muscular aches and pains can be used in a similar way to aid rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica, lumbago, sprains etc.

Genito-urinary System: Lavender is valuable in treating menstrual pain or scanty menstruation and during labour can help to reduce the pain of contractions if massaged into the lower back.

General: The action of Lavender on the heart is tonic and sedative making it valuable for the treatment of palpitations. It can be used to help in minor upsets of infancy where a child is irritable or suffers from colic or other childhood
infections. A single drop of Lavender adder to a baby’s bath can help it to sleep well. It can also be used as an insect repellent or to protect clothes from moths or other small pests.

Mixing Oils: Lavender blends well with other flower oils such as Geranium and with citrus oils such as Bergamot as well as Pine, Patchouli, Marjoram and Rosemary, Cedarwood, Clary Sage and Clove
