Description
Origin: Grapefruit is a Hybrid between Citrus maxima and Citrus sinensis. There are many different varieties grown in different parts of the world and not much is known about its origins or how it came to be used in aromatherapy.
It has varied uses including helping to eliminate toxins and stimulating the lymph glands. It is good for helping certain skin conditions and is valuable in helping treat obesity. However its major functions are as an antidepressant as its smell can brighten any dull day.
Sources: It is native to tropical Asia and the West Indies. Most of the oil now comes from Israel, Florida, Brazil and California with the latter being the major contributor.
Skin Care: Dilute Grapefruit oil in orange flower water and use as a tonic on the skin to combat oiliness and acne. It will also help to tone the skin. It can also be diluted in base oil and massaged into the scalp to help oily hair.
Circulation: Blend with Geranium oil and use it in a lymphatic massage or after a lot of exercise. It will help to detoxify and stimulate. After exercise it will help to reduce aching and stiffness.
General: Grapefruit would be an excellent oil to burn during the winter months as it is a sunny oil and mentally enlivening.
Mixing oils: It mixes well with Lemon, Palmarosa, Bergamot, Neroli, Rosemary, Cypress, Lavender and Geranium.
