Hangover

A hangover (veisalgia) describes the sum of unpleasant physiological effects following heavy consumption of drugs and liquor, particularly alcoholic beverages. The most commonly reported characteristics of a hangover include headache, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, lethargy, depression and thirst.

Hypoglycemia, dehydration, Acetaldehyde intoxication, and vitamin B12 deficiency are all theorized causes of hangover symptoms. Hangovers usually last 1 to 4 hours although some have been reported to last two or three days after alcohol was last consumed.  Hangovers are multi-causal. Ethanol has a dehydrating effect by causing increased urine production (such substances are known as diuretics), which causes headaches, dry mouth, and lethargy. Dehydration causes the brain to shrink away from the skull slightly. This can be mitigated by drinking water after consumption of alcohol. Alcohol's effect on the stomach lining can account for nausea.

Because glucose is the primary energy source of the brain, this lack of glucose contributes to hangover symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, mood disturbances, and decreased attention and concentration. There are various nervous system effects: the removal of the depressive effects of alcohol in the brain probably account for the light and noise sensitivity.

Foods to eat before drinking should be low-salt complex carbohydrates, such as bread, some crackers, or even vegetable sticks. Carbohydrates delay alcohol absorption. Fat-protein snacks, such as milk or cheese, will decrease alcohol absorption and thus help reduce drunkenness and hangovers. Some people drink a little olive oil before parties to coat their stomachs so that they can handle their drinking better. A few capsules of evening primrose oil will also help. It does take a while for alcohol to clear from the blood after it gets in there.

If alcohol intake has been excessive, drink two or three glasses of water before going to bed, along with vitamin C and a B complex vitamin which helps to clear alcohol from the blood. The vitamin C can be in the form of mineral ascorbates containing potassium, calcium, magnesium, and even zinc, or 15 mg. of zinc can be taken separately. Do this again upon awakening; it can really help. Further benefit may be obtained by taking evening primrose oil and flaxseed oil, which is a rich source of the essential fatty acids.

Aromatherapy Treatments:

Some essential oils are good to use in the case of a hangover. The best ones are Fennel, Juniper, Peppermint and Rosemary Essential Oils. Aromatherapy can be used to treat nausea. This is effectively done simply by rubbing a blend of any of the above four essential  oils diluted in carrier oil in a circular motion on your stomach and pulse points or by anointing a handkerchief with a few drops so that you can sniff the aroma.

Essential Oils that are very effective for warding off that feeling like you overdid it are Peppermint, Orange, Clary Sage, Geranium, Eucalyptus, Ginger and Basil. The optimum cure would be a preparation that you would blend yourself in almond oil and massage round the stomach area or put on a handkerchief and sniff. Alternatively run a bath and place a few drops of any of these oils in the warm water and relax. For headache remedies click here.
