Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile liquid plant material, known as essential oils and other scented compounds from plants for the purpose of affecting a person's mood or health.
Aromatherapy is a generic term that refers to any of the various traditions that make use of essential oils sometimes in combination with other alternative medical practices and spiritual beliefs. It has a particularly Western currency and persuasion.
Although the terminology “Aromatherapy” as we know it is a relatively recent word the actual principles behind the practice and the use of plants for healing people is a very ancient concept.
Aromatherapy in today´s society is being considered with increasing interest as science discovers more about why the use of these plants actually works and as more people look for alternatives to conventional medicines. Essential oils are readily absorbed through the skin and whenever they are used in massage, baths or compresses the effects are increased by the inhalation of the oils.
